Design & Research

adjuyandkidt works where visual communication meets design research. We design and lead participatory processes — workshops, fieldwork, speculative prototypes — and give their findings a visual language that organizations and communities can act on. The practice moves between studio and field: directing identities and campaigns one week, facilitating futures workshops with a neighborhood association the next.

Who I Am

I’m Muhammad Fajrur Rahmat — a designer and design researcher working between Tokyo and Bandung. adjuyandkidt is my independent practice, built on seven years of professional creative leadership and a doctorate in media design.

Before research, I led design teams as Executive Art Director at Percolate Galactic in Jakarta, delivering work for Disney, MTV, Google.org, GIPHY, and Cartoon Network, and contributing to a Sundance Film Festival Grand Jury Prize nominee. I hold a Ph.D. in Media Design from Keio University Graduate School of Media Design, an M.A. in Graphic Communication Design from Central Saint Martins, and a B.Des in Visual Communication Design from Institut Teknologi Bandung.

I also founded Speculative Today, Indonesia’s first design collective and learning platform for futures studies and speculative design, and co-founded Rupa Desain, a multidisciplinary collective for design archiving and research.

Approach

Every engagement is treated as a study. We start with questions, not deliverables: defining what needs to be understood, choosing methods to match, running sessions in the field, and feeding what we learn back into the work.

The toolkit is hands-on and participatory — semi-structured interviews, ethnographic observation, participatory scenario planning, diegetic and tactile prototyping, co-design workshops. Findings are translated into visual narratives and artifacts that people can gather around, argue with, and build on.

Design Philosophy

Futures thinking fails when it stays abstract. Our work grounds it in cultural metaphor — images, objects, and stories that already carry meaning for the people in the room. When communities recognize themselves in the material, the futures they plan become more specific, more locally grounded, and more aligned with their own values.

Design, for us, is how research becomes negotiable: something a community can see, touch, and decide on together.

Methodology

Much of our work applies the Resonance Framework, an original methodology developed and validated through doctoral research at Keio University: cultural metaphor elicitation, causal layered analysis, stakeholder interaction mapping, and diegetic plus tactile prototyping, combined into an iterative cycle of community-based participatory action planning.

The framework has been tested across three applied workshop cycles — with undergraduate students, graduate students, and urban grassroots associations in Bandung — and published through IASDR and PDC.
