Background & Challenge
A winning entry for the Time Out Magazine 50th anniversary cover competition, built around the theme “Your London: how do you see the city?”
London is a city that never quite settles — shaped by people from over 270 nationalities, unpredictable weather, and the uncertainty of Brexit looming at the time. The brief asked entrants to capture how they personally saw the city for a landmark anniversary cover.
The challenge was finding one image that could hold all of that: London’s constant change alongside the excitement that keeps drawing people to it regardless of the conditions.
Research & Process
The concept turned London into a glittering bowl of shaved ice piled with toppings shaped like the city’s icons — Elizabeth Tower (well, Big Ben), red buses, market stalls — the landmarks acting as the eye-catching layer people associate with the city. Underneath, a small hand cradles a world map, standing in for the global community holding the city’s foundation together.

Reflection
London, piled high and melting fast — and somehow always worth the mess.
A fun brief that pushed toward finding one visual metaphor sturdy enough to carry a whole city’s contradictions.
