Background & Challenge
A collection of standalone illustration projects, each built around a different story, medium and client.
One project was for Hoolahoop, a Bandung-based pop-rock band, who wanted their journey as bandmates documented through visual art for their mini concert “Konser Untuk Berlari.” The brief centred on friendship as a journey — the ups and downs of staying tied together over time.
Another was concept art for “Aach… Aku Jatuh Cinta,” a pop drama-comedy directed by Indonesian filmmaker Garin Nugroho. The story follows a young couple set against 1970s Indonesia leading into the political upheaval of 1998. The director needed illustrations of the heroine’s diary entries to use as motion-graphic scene transitions.
Research & Process
For Hoolahoop, the illustration used loose ink linework and smoky, wing-footed figures mid-performance to capture momentum and camaraderie. For the film, the brief called for a lighter, more melancholic touch, so the work used desaturated pastel watercolour and left detail deliberately sparse to match the story’s mood, alongside supporting sketches exploring the couple’s likeness.

Outcome & Gallery
The Hoolahoop artwork was exhibited at the band’s mini concert; the film illustrations were delivered as concept art for use in scene transitions.
Reflection
Different briefs, different hands — same instinct for finding the story in a single image.
Working across such different tones and mediums early on helped build a flexible illustration practice rather than one fixed style.
